Major General
John E. Longhouser


     A 1965 graduate of the United States Military Academy, John Longhouser was assigned troop duty with the 3d Armored Division in Germany. Following two tours in Vietnam, he returned to West Point in 1972 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering.

      After graduating from the Command and General Starr College in 1976, MG Longhouser worked at General Motors with the Army’s Training with Industry Program in 1976-77. He was then assigned to the XM1 Abrams Tank program until 1980.

     Upon graduating from the industrial College of the Armed Forces, MG Longhouser was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army and, later, as Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Army. He returned to the Army’s main battle tank program in 1987 and in 1990, was selected to be the Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, helping to reshape defense policy in this area during a period of dynamic change. On 4 October 1993, MG Longhouser assumed his present position.

     Holding a Masters in Engineering degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, MG Longhouser is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia. His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (2OLC), Bronze Star (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), Air Medals and Army Commendation Medal.

     Major General Longhouser and his wife, Karen, have two children and reside at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
