Donald W.R. Dobson, OMM, CD


     Brigadier General  Dobson is currently Director General Force Development, Canadian Armed Forces, a post he has occupied since 1 April 1987.

     Born and educated in southern Saskatchewn, Bob Dobson joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956, earned his wings at Portage la Prairie the following year and served for six years in Moose Jaw as a flying instructor and member of the Golden Hawk Aerobatic Team.

     In 1963 Dobson became Project Officer for the Tutor jet training aircraft, commuting between Air Force headquarters in Ottawa and Canadair in Montreal. He then attended the first integrated Staff College course in Toronto and proceeded to West Germany where he flew CF 104 aircraft for the 422d and 441st Strike/Attack Squadrons.

     In the 1970’s, then Lieutenant Colonel Dobson served in staff officer and command positions at Air Defence Command headquarters, at Cold Lake, Alberta CFB Petawawa and CFB Borden. He was promoted to Colonel in 1979 and appointed Deputy Commander of 10th Tactical Air Group at St. Hubert, Quebec. In 1982, Col Dobson assumed command of CFB Comox in British Columbia.

     Before accepting his current assignment, Col Dobson was Project Director, Future Aerospace Studies, where he assumed responsibility for the conduct of major research and planning for the application and employment of aerospace power in the twenty first century.
