Edward C. Peter
Edward C. Peter was born 8 May 1929 in Washington D.C. 

He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1951 and has a Masters of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

He served in the Korean Conflict as a platoon leader, company executive officer,  assistant battalion S3, and battalion S3 in the 35th Infantry Regiment.  He later commanded Company F, 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Company D, 2nd Battle Group, 21st Infantry Division in Hawaii.  While in Hawaii, General Peter also served as Aide-de-Camp to the Commander of the 25th Infantry Division and as unit advisor to the 100th Battle Group, 442nd Infantry (USAR).

Following his completion of Command and General Staff College in 1963, he was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Legislative Liaison, Department of the Army, until 1966, when he attended the Armed Forces Staff College.

He commanded the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam and later served on the staff of the II Field Force.  In July 1969, he was assigned to the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers, Europe.  In June 1972, he returned to the United States to command the 1st Infantry Division Support Command at Fort Riley, Kansas.

In August 1976, he returned to Hawaii as the Assistant Division Commander, 25th Infantry Division.  From June 1978 to June 1981, he was again assigned to Headquarters, Department of the Army as the Chief of Legislative Liaison.

Lieutenant General Peter assumed command of Fort Polk and the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) in July 1981 and served in this position until July 1983.  He was then assigned as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Department of the Army in August 1983.

Lieutenant General Edward Peter assumed Command of the 4th U.S. Army in July 1984.

Lieutenant General Peter’s awards include the 2nd award of the Combat Infantryman’s badge, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star with Oak leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with Oak leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (6 awards), Parachute Badge, General Staff Badge.
